Members of Unitarian Church North, Mequon, selected Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, Inc., in Milwaukee as the recipient of a grant from the church’s Fund for Social Justice. The check was presented on Aug. 16 at Growing Power. Growing Power is the 2010 recipient based on its mission to raise affordable fresh food for inner-city residents.
The Unitarian Church North Fund for Social Justice provides grants to address problems of hunger, homelessness, lack of childcare, lack of affordable housing, and other social concerns in the Greater Milwaukee Area. The Fund is managed by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.
Growing Power has received international recognition as a model for city-center agriculture. Growing Power feeds 10,000 people annually from its two-acre Milwaukee farm and a country farm in Merton. In May, Time magazine named Will Allen one of the Time 100 World’s Most Influential People.
Other recipients of Unitarian Church North Fund for Social Justice grants include Grafton Literacy Center, The Benedict Center, Pearls for Teen Girls, the Amachi Program of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Grand Avenue Club, and others.
Unitarian Church North, 13800 N. Port Washington Road, Mequon, is an active Unitarian Universalist congregation, which welcomes people of all religious backgrounds, racial and cultural identities, and sexual and affectional orientations.
