Driving is new and exciting for teens. For many, it’s the first step into adulthood and independence. And while they are thinking about all the great things that come along with driving, they often forget about the consequences.

One of the best things you can do to help develop a safe teen driver is to attach significance to what he or she is doing. Driving is a huge responsibility that comes with very real consequences:

• Crashing

• Injury

• Damage to the car

• Increased insurance costs

• Suspended license

• Speeding tickets

• Tickets for disobeying other rules of the road

You can help your teen driver understand that actions behind the wheel have real outcomes. Remember, safe driving behaviors deserve recognition as well. Consider some of these ideas to reinforce what they’re doing right:

• Offer your teen gas money

• Offer to pay part or all of their insurance at times

• Extend their allowance of using your vehicle
