Whitefish Bay boys soccer

The Blue Dukes won a WIAA regional title with wins over Milwaukee Pulaski (10-0) and Bradley Tech (3-0).

Bay (16-5) will now advance to a WIAA sectional semifinal it will host Thursday against Milwaukee City Conference champion Ronald Reagan (22-1) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The winner will likely face defending state champion Marquette in the sectional final on Saturday at 7 p.m. back at Bay for a right to advance to the WIAA State Tournament Oct. 27-29) at Uihlein Soccer Park.

In the win over Tech, Paul Gwidt (Austin Middleton), Jake Taylor and Jack Comisky (T.J. Schmidt all scored goals.

Nicolet girls tennis

Erin and Sara Miller fell one place short of their seed when they took third in doubles in the WIAA State Individual Tournament last weekend in Madison.

The duo (28-4) will lead the Knights into the state team tournament this weekend back at Nielsen Stadium in Madison. They will take on Middleton in a 5 p.m. quarterfinal on Friday.Miller and Miller had a first-round bye at individual state and then beat Sheboygan North (6-2, 6-1); Merrill (6-2, 6-1) and Brookfield East (6-4, 7-5) pairs before falling to the eventual runner-ups from DSHA, 6-3, 6-1).

In the consolation match with the Central pair, the Knight pair battled back from a 4-0 deficit in the first set to win 6-4, 7-5.

Other entries at state for Nicolet included the doubles team of Michelle Margolies and Erin Wathen (21-10 overall, 0-1 in the tournament); Emily Mone (19-13, 2-1); Emma Wathen (27-6, 0-1); and Nina Gerard (23-10, 1-1).

Whitefish Bay girls tennis

Sophomore Lilly Hayes lived up to her seeding as she finished fourth in singles in the WIAA state individual tournament in Madison last weekend.

Hayes (23-4), had a first-round bye and then beat Oshkosh West (6-0, 6-0); Madison East (6-0, 6-0) and Middleton (2-6, 6-4, 6-4) opponents, before falling to eventual champion and North Shore rival Elisabeth Konon of Homestead, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinal.

In the third place match, Hayes dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Homestead's Aly Coran.

Other qualifiers included Asia Butler (19-9, 0-1); and the doubles team of Elena Ouimet and Jackie Comerford (9-11, 0-1).

Brown Deer football

The Falcons (5-3 in Woodland and 5-4 overall) will open their WIAA playoff efforts with a level I, division 3 game Friday at Kewaskum (9-0) at 7 p.m.

If they win, they will advance to a level 2 game against the winner of Pewaukee (7-2) and Catholic Memorial (6-3) on either Oct. 28 or 29. Brown Deer will also host the division 4 game between University School and Valders at 4 p.m. Saturday.

In the 28-15 regular season closing loss to New Berlin Eisenhower Friday, the Falcons were behind 21-0 at the quarter and could never recover.

Najee Williams had 110 yards rushing on 32 carries with both of the Falcon TDs while quarterback Jake Schimenz had 51 yards on 17 carries. Pietro D'Amato had 13 catches for 179 yards for Brown Deer.

Nicolet girls volleyball

The Knights finished in a tie for the North Shore Conference title after taking third in the league tournament last Saturday at Cedarburg.

It was controversial, as Germantown deliberately lost a pool play match so it could meet Nicolet in the semifinals. The only way the Warhawks could tie the Knights for the league title is if they won the tournament and then Nicolet finished third.

They wound up beating the Knights 25-19, 29-27, in the semifinal and then beat Homestead in the final while Nicolet beat Milwaukee Lutheran in the consolation match.

"We will certainly have to be more consistent. As for losing to Germantown, I thought they played very well and we did not play at our best. I disagree with the way they went about getting to play us in the semifinals, but they played within the rules of the conference and I give them full credit for their victory over us," said coach Dann Jacobson.

Nicolet was led by Melissa Morello with 43 kills and Krystalyn Goode with 35 while Dana Kenney went over 1,000 assists for her career with 98 for the day.

Nicolet, ranked fourth in the state, earned the top seed in the Brookfield East WIAA sectional. The Knights earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of Milwaukee Riverside and Milwaukee King in a regional final at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Shorewood boys volleyball

The Greyhounds competed well in the Whitefish Bay Invitational last Saturday, taking second to powerful Catholic Memorial in the final.

Coach Kevin Gemignani singled out Andrew Mueller, Karl Apfelbach, Ken Plaisted Libero Adam Kessenich, Bryan Frieseke and Evan Kartheiser.

In pool play, the Greyhounds defeated Kettle Moraine, Fort Atkinson and Bay. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Westosha Central, 25-27, 25-18, and in the semifinals downed Nicolet, 24-26, 25-12, 15-10. The loss to second-ranked Memorial in the final came 25-21, 25-16.

With a win over Wauwatosa West earlier in the week, Shorewood is now 20-5 in match play and 6-1 in conference.
