Board eases rules for participating in sports; creates athletics Hall of Fame

July 28, 2010 | 0 comments

Glendale — Academic standards for freshmen athletes are falling a bit at Nicolet High School.

The new requirement states a freshman must maintain a 1.75 grade-point average, rather than the previously mandated 2.0, in order to participate in school sports.

"We need to get more people involved; we need to get them in sports as freshmen," Athletic Director Kirk Krychowiak said.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors are still be required to keep a 2.0 GPA.

Students who fall below the academic requirements will be allowed to practice with their teams but will not be allowed to compete. Previously they were barred from both practice and competition.

Krychowiak said allowing them to go to practice would be an incentive to improve their grades.

"Both changes are valuable for athletes," he said.

District Administrator Rick Monroe said the athletic code adjustments are in line with the district's strategic plan to increase student participation in athletics and other co-curricular activities. There are not as many students taking part in those programs as one would expect at a school with Nicolet's student population, he said.

In another move targeted at drawing interest to Nicolet's athletics program, the district is establishing a Hall of Fame to honor alumni who distinguished themselves athletically while at the high school.

Sixteen alumni will make up the first class of inductees, Krychowiak said.

Former athletic director Frank Wolfe helped compile the list and contact the athletes.

Krychowiak said the group will be honored at halftime during the Oct. 15 football game. A luncheon will be held the next day and plaques honoring the athletes' accomplishments unveiled.

"The whole idea is to get people talking about Nicolet athletics," Krychowiak said.

In a boost for athletes and the district in general, the School Board on Monday accepted the donation of a of a $21,000 scoreboard for football, track and soccer. Milwaukee Sporting Goods and Eggers Imprints are donating and installing it. Dan Eggers, the owner of Eggers Imprints, is a Nicolet graduate.
