Proposed village budget calls for 3 percent levy hike

Oct. 16, 2009 | 0 comments

River Hills — Taxpayers would see a 2 percent tax rate increase of 12 cents per $1,000 of assessed value under the proposed 2010 budget

For the owner of the average home assessed at $700,000, taxes would increase less than $100 for the village portion of their tax bill, from $4,193 last year to $4,277 this year.

The tax levy of $2.6 million to support the proposed $3.76 million budget is up $84,437, or 3 percent, from a year ago.

Trustees completed their review of the budget Wednesday night, asking to see information on an upgraded video recording system for police squad cars. The $30,000 request is part of the capital budget and will be reviewed by the board prior to its approval.

The village is facing the same issues as other communities, increasing health care costs and payments to the state retirement systems and decreasing state aid.

The village will also see a significant increase in its refuse collection costs, from $118,734 to $176,532. Contractor Veolia Environmental attributes the increase to the scooter system used to bring refuse from houses down to the truck on the street.

The Village Board will take comments on the budget at a public hearing at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at Village Hall, 7560 N. Pheasant Lane.
