Police response worthy of praise, commendation

April 28, 2009 | 0 comments

Editor's note: This letter was directed to River Hills Police Chief Tom Rischmann.

Public Forum:

Very rarely does it happen that I would have the opportunity, or the reason, to write this letter. But, recent events in the village compel me to write you now, for several reasons.

First is to say how proud I am about the manner in which you and your officers handled the perilous situation that confronted all of you April 16. I do not know the names of the officers who were involved in the exchange of gunfire. I can only say that their selfless bravery and professional conduct was worthy of our highest praise and commendation. We are all comforted to realize that our village Police Department is, in fact, the finest in all of Milwaukee County.

Second, the horrific accident that occurred April 18 is not within the dimensions of my imagination to understand, much less to rationalize as being among the hazards of daily life. Despite the magnitude of this unthinkable situation, you and your officers acted with dignity and deliberate, professional purpose to manage a circumstance for which you could have no practical preparation. We applaud you and thank you for the conduct of your entire department.

Finally, I hope you will tell your officers who have taken upon themselves the burden and personal consequence of their duty on behalf of every resident of this village that we stand beside them with the greatest sense of pride and confidence. Our gratitude to them is profound. And, for whatever lies ahead, they can know that we will support them in any and every way that we possibly can.
