Joplin humane society seeks donations

Glendale - Tina Clementi, the general manager of Trim Time, is collecting supplies and money for animals displaced by the Joplin, Mo., tornado.

Clementi and two co-workers plan to drive to Joplin on June 23 to drop off the items they collect. Needed are animal blankets, kennels, bowls and food. If you want to donate money, checks can be made out to the Joplin Humane Society.

Many pet owners, homeless themselves, have been forced to give up their pets. The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri is taking the overflow from Joplin. Any excess supplies or money would go to Springfield if they are not needed in Joplin.

Donations may be dropped off at Trim Time, 6131 N. Green Bay Ave., between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday.

Johnson Controls gets work hours variance

Glendale - The Common Council on Monday granted a second variance for work hours to Johnson Controls. The company is building a two-story vertical addition to its Power Solutions building, pending approval of a height variance after press time June 15.

Hunzinger Construction will be allowed to work from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday in order to lift structural steel for the upper floors. The project will start on July 18 and last about 20 weeks.

Previously the council agreed to allow weekend work through September on a vertical addition to the parking garage.

Preliminary budget shows slight surplus

Shorewood - The School Board closed a $1.9 million budget gap in its 2011-12 preliminary budget and managed to add three teachers in the process. But other staff positions were cut.

Cuts to additional administration staff and custodial overtime along with requiring nearly $740,000 (5.8 percent) in employee contribution to the Wisconsin Retirement System and capping salary increases at an estimated 1 percent helped reduce the deficit.

However, three teachers will be added to the district schools to better balance out class size in the elementary and middle schools.

The revised budget has a surplus of $1,295.

The preliminary budget was approved with a 3-2 vote. Board President Paul Zovic and member Michael Mishlove voted against it.

The final budget will be voted on in the fall and will likely have adjustments due to state aid, which is partially based on final enrollment numbers in September.

North Shore Fire Department enters into scope of service contract

The North Shore Fire Department will enter into a contract outlining the services that will be provided by the new Bayside Dispatch Center. The NSFD Board of Directors approved the plan June 14. Currently the NSFD is dispatched from the center in Whitefish Bay.

The seven communities that make up the department will cover the cost of dispatching fire and ambulance through their contracts with Bayside, according to NSFD Chief Robert Whitaker.

Board approves pre-tax WRS contributions

Shorewood - The School Board on Tuesday approved pre-tax Wisconsin Retirement System contributions for employees. As part of its deficit reduction, the board is requiring employees to pay 5.8 percent of their salaries into the state-run pension fund.

Board accepts PTO donation for Richards School playground

Whitefish Bay - The School Board last week approved a $17,975 donation from the Parent Teacher Organization at Richards Elementary School for playground equipment.

The district had allocated $30,000 toward the project, but the cost of replacing and relocating the former playground toward the school's northwestern end exceeded cost projections.

Mequon friar celebrates jubilee with Capuchin order

Mequon - Mequon native, Leopold Gleissner, is one of 15 Capuchin friars who will have their jubilee celebrations at St. Lawrence Seminary High School, the founding site of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph in Mount Calvary, Wis., on Aug. 5.

Anniversaries that will be celebrated include one friar celebrating 70 years in the Capuchin order; seven friars marking 65 years; four friars celebrating 60 years in the order; two friars celebrating their 50-year jubilee and one friar is marking his 25th year in the order. Gleissner is celebrating 65 years.

Leopold served in the missions field from 1956-1972. He served Hispanic communities throughout the country from 1973-1991. He is now retired in Appleton.

A licensed ham radio operator, he was able to help connect the missions and missionaries to relatives and friends.

Foundation seeks homes for exchange students

STS Foundation, a nonprofit exchange program, is inviting local families to host international exchange students for the 2011-12 school year.

The teenage students come from more than 30 countries and will attend area high schools. They have their own spending money and insurance. Host families are responsible for meals, a place to sleep and a nurturing environment. STS Foundation will have a local coordinator that will supervise the students and support the families throughout the school year.

Two incoming students include Aline and Jenni.

Aline, 16, is from Switzerland. She lives with her parents and her 18-year-old sister. Her mom is a bookkeeper and her dad works for the city. She loves music and plays the viola, cello and piano. She also practices karate every week, likes to do origami and enjoys painting. She does not eat meat but is able to cook her own meals.

Jenni is from Finland, where she lives with her mother and 14-year-old brother. Her parents are divorced and she has a 3-year-old half-sister who lives with her father. Her mom is a pharmacist and her dad is an officer in the army. Jenni loves swimming and competes in the Finnish nationals each year and has the second best record for her age group in the 50-meter butterfly and third best in the 100-meter butterfly. She would love to continue swimming while here.

Residents asked to contribute to cancer research effort

Brown Deer - Residents of the Milwaukee area have an unprecedented opportunity to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). CPS-3 will enroll a diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States and Puerto Rico. The opportunity for local residents to enroll in CPS-3 will take place at the Relay for Life at Brown Deer High School, 8060 N. 60th St.

The relay will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 24.

To enroll in the study, individuals complete two steps, one in person and one at home. As part of the in-person enrollment, individuals complete a brief written survey, provide some physical measurements, and give a small blood sample. The enrollment process is complete when individuals complete the more comprehensive baseline survey. Over the course of the study - which is anticipated to last 20 to 30 years - participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years that will be sent to their home.

The initial enrollment process takes about 30 minutes at the local event and an additional 45 to 60 minutes at home to fill out the more comprehensive baseline survey. Periodic follow-up surveys of various lengths are expected to be sent every few years to individuals. The voluntary, long-term commitment by participants is what will produce benefits for decades to come.

School Board approves hires, resignations

Fox Point - The Maple Dale-Indian Hill School Board last week approved one staff hire and one resignation.

Anna Kordysh has been offered a contract for the 2011-12 school year as a second-grade teacher. Since March, she's held the position, filling in for a teacher who's been on a leave of absence.

District Administrator Mary Dean recommended Kordysh for the position, saying she has "outstanding credentials."

"I have observed her in the classroom," Dean said. "She has been an active participant in all staff meetings, has attended Parent-Teacher conferences and has given grades during her substitute assignment."

The board also approved the resignation of art teacher Katherine Nowak, to take effect at the end of the current school year. Nowak, who's been working with the district under a part-time contract, has accepted a full-time position at Homestead High School.

Village awards contract to firm to read sewer meters

Whitefish Bay - The Village Board on Monday awarded a $27,100 contract to Donohue and Associates to interpret data coming from meters monitoring flow within Whitefish Bay's sanitary sewer system.

The village in cooperation with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District placed meters in strategic locations to monitor the system in the aftermath of last year's torrential rains.

Assistant Village Manager Matt Schuenke said internal staff do not have the capability to accurately analyze data from the meters. Donohue officials will be providing services throughout the summer.

New street lights coming to portions of Whitefish Bay

Whitefish Bay - The village will be upgrading portions of its older street lights this summer at a cost of about $451,230.

New lights are being installed south of Hampton Road, to the village border, and along Woodburn Street, east of the lake. Assistant Village Manager Matt Schuenke said the lights are among the village's oldest and consistently fail.

Wil-Surge Electric will oversee the project at a cost to the village of $409,350. Contracts previously issued for supplemental work have included $18,500 to Graef for engineering work and $23,380 to Wil-Surge for work near Cumberland School.

The Village Board approved the $409,350 contract with Wil-Surge on Monday.

Resurfacing slated for six streets this summer in Bay

Whitefish Bay - Street resurfacing will take place this summer along portions of Bay Ridge, Bartlett, Hollywood, Kent, Lancaster and Lydell avenues, following action by the Village Board on Monday.

The board approved a recommendation by village staff to award a $280,194 contract to Stark Asphalt. The firm was the lowest bidder for the project. The village had earmarked $350,000 for the work in its 2011 budget, but Assistant Village Manager Matt Schuenke said the cost was defrayed because Whitefish Bay teamed up with Brown Deer, a community undertaking similar work, to increase the size of the contract and lower bid prices.

Property owners living within the affected areas will be charged a special assessment fee.

Heidi Bird Design to open in Tabak building

Glendale - Heidi Bird, a self-proclaimed dance mom, will open a sewing and alteration business at 6045 N. Green Bay Ave. Bird, a dress maker, designs and sews Irish dance dresses for the Rince Nia Dance Academy, which is located in the building as well as for other dance schools. The Plan Commission granted her an occupancy permit for her business.

District continues outsourcing for computer services

Fox Point - The Maple Dale-Indian Hill School District will continue to contract with the Terlau Corporation for technology support and computer network administration services for the 2011-12 school year.

Craig Terlau, head of the company, has worked with the district since the 2007-08 school year. At the time, he redesigned and reconfigured Maple Dale-Indian Hill's entire computer network system.

Bay officers handing out baseball cards this summer

Whitefish Bay - The Whitefish Bay Police Department is handing out Milwaukee Brewers baseball cards to children, with the goal of providing positive interactions between local officers and youth.

M&I Bank's Whitefish Bay branch is funding the initiative. Whitefish Bay Police have been given sets, each containing 30 cards, to distribute to children.

Marquette professor receives top research honor

Whitefish Bay - Village resident Rosemary Stuart, professor of biological sciences at Marquette University, has been named the university's 2011 recipient of the Lawrence G. Haggerty Award for Research Excellence. The annual award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated scholarly distinction and an all-encompassing belief in excellence.

Stuart researches mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes.

The knowledge that she is generating can then be used by other researchers to translate into the treatment of diseases and medical conditions. Some heart and neurological conditions in humans, for example, can be traced back to mitochondrial defects.

Stuart is the first faculty member to have received both the Haggerty Award and a Teaching Excellence Award (2008) from the university.

Scholz named vice president of finance, CFO at Concordia

Mequon- Concordia University Wisconsin administrators have named Joan Scholz, controller since 2001, as vice president of finance and chief financial officer.

In addition to overseeing the finance department, she will continue to be responsible for the yearly audit and taxes. She will also add the increased responsibility in the areas of insurance/risk management, cost accounting, budgeting and grant accounting.

A 1989 graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin, Scholz previously worked as senior auditor for Price Waterhouse, Milwaukee, and for Milwaukee-based M&I Data Services/Metavante Corporation.

A longtime member of First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg, Scholz lives in Mequon with her husband, Jay, and two daughters, Rachel and Amber.

Concordia University adds social media manager

Mequon- Concordia University Wisconsin has just hired a full-time social media manger as part of its marketing team. Marshal Frisque will be responsible for maintaining all social media content for CUW as well as monitoring the university's online brand and presence. He will work with departments on CUW's Mequon campus, as well as the individual off-site center locations throughout the region getting them on board and guiding them in numerous social media campaigns.

Currently, the University is utilizing such tools as Facebook and Twitter and will now focus on expanding that with the addition of Frisque. Frisque is a 2011 graduate of CUW with a degree in Computer Science. He also spent three years working in CUW's IT Department and worked part-time in the marketing department before beginning his full-time duties on June 1.
