Nature center to host Great Outdoors Weekend

Bayside - The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, 1111 E. Brown Deer Road, will present a Great Outdoors Weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Concordia workshop focuses on fuel efficiency

Mequon - A workshop on fuel economy takes place at Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday.

The event kicks off at noon Friday, when gubernatorial candidates Mark Neumann and Mark Todd speak about energy independence and transportation. Friday also will feature a panel discussion on energy independence in Wisconsin moderated by Channel 12 reporter Kent Wainscott. Energy-efficient vehicles will be on display until 5 p.m.

On Saturday, the workshop continues from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with several energy-efficient vehicles again placed across campus.

At noon, Brad Fons of Drive $mart America will speak and have tips on making sure your vehicle is as fuel efficient as possible.

Church to hold children's health and safety fair

Glendale - Memorial Lutheran Church, 7701 North Green Bay Ave., will host a free children's health and safety fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event will feature booths with information and activities for school-aged children on topics such as nutrition, bicycle safety, and Internet safety, tobacco prevention. There will also be a fire engine, police car and ambulance available for tours and pictures.

The event also includes a rummage and bake sale inside the church.

Local businesses to shine at Showcase Shorewood

Shorewood - Showcase Shorewood, a day of sidewalk sales, special in-store promotions, and an art and craft fair and business expo on the lawn of Shorewood High School takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26.

Free trolley rides will provide transportation along Oakland Avenue and Capitol Drive. Live music will be performed throughout the day on the high school lawn. In case of rain, the art fair and business expo will be held in the high school.
