Shoe store collects donations

for homeless population

Glendale - Stan's Fit For Your Feet, 505 W. Silver Spring Drive, hosts its seventh annual Share-A-Pair shoe drive for the homeless population through Feb. 28.

People can drop off their new or gently used shoes 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday or 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Anyone who donates adult shoes at Stan's Fit For Your Feet receives a $10 gift card to be used toward a footwear purchase during February at any Stan's Fit For Your Feet or New Balance locations. Children's shoe donations will receive a $5 gift certificate to be used toward a future pair of kids' shoes.

Some of the shoes collected are personally delivered and fit for many of the area's homeless who frequent Milwaukee's Repairers of the Breach homeless day shelter. Father Gene's Help Center in West Allis also receives and distributes the shoes to the needy in Milwaukee. The remainder of the donated shoes is given to Soles4Souls, which collects new shoes to give relief to the victims of abject suffering and collects used shoes to support microenterprise efforts to eradicate poverty.

Shorewood - Shorewood School District is recognizing the talents of its older students.

Show Case features the talents of the high school students at 7 p.m. March 1 and 2 in the high school auditorium.

Show Case is a joint fundraiser for both the AFS Exchange Student Program and the Drama Department at the high school.

Seating is reserved. Tickets are available by filling out a form at the front office, through any cast member, by mailing a check and order to Joe King, Shorewood High School, 1701 E. Capitol Drive, Shorewood, WI 53211, or by visiting shorewooddrama.org.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Patron tickets are available for $30 each and are for the front few rows of the center section of the auditorium.

Stritch presents variety

of art exhibits

Glendale - Cardinal Stritch University, 6801 N. Yates Road, exhibits works in the Northwestern Mutual Art Gallery.

League of Milwaukee Artists members exhibit works through March 17. The gallery will be closed March 3 to 10.

Participants learn useful tips for having a beautiful, healthy lawn without using pesticides or heavy metals. Additionally, Joyce will explore the harm that pesticides and chemical fertilizers can cause to the water supply, humans, domestic animals and wildlife.

Rain Gardens, Rain Barrels and Plant Sale: 1 to 2:30 p.m. April 6 in the Shorewood Village Center

This event features ways to save money on watering while keeping excess rainwater out of the sewers and village basements.

Items for sale include furniture, clothes, electronics, books, toys, kitchenware, pictures, tools and lawn and garden utensils.

Proceeds will be used for equipment, trips and scholarships.

writing workshop

River Hills - Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 W. Brown Deer Road, hosts Discovering the Hidden Story, a writing workshop with Sharon Fiffer, March 8 to 10.

All writers, at any stage of their work, are welcome to participate in a weekend intensive with Fiffer, author of the Jane Wheel mysteries and a popular blog, "What I Learned at the EZ Way Inn."

Join Carl Krueger

on his walking 'crusade'

Brown Deer - Village President Carl Krueger leads the second of three monthly walks through the village March 9.

The program, dubbed "Carl's Crusade," aims to encourage healthy lifestyles and familiarize residents with business around the village. The walk starts at 9 a.m. at Village Hall and proceeds to Brown Deer Road and west to the village limit and back. The subjects of conversation Saturday will be businesses along the route, including the vacant Lowe's building.

The last "crusade" is scheduled for April 6 in the run up to The Deer Run 5K/Walk. Those who participate in the crusades and join Krueger and his team in the 5K will receive a special "Carl's Crusade" shirt.

Concert benefits four

school district foundations

Glendale - Band Together, a concert featuring Bucky Badger and the University of Wisconsin Marching Band, will be held at 1:30 p.m. March 10 at Nicolet High School, 6701 N. Jean Nicolet Road.

The concert benefits the Fox Point-Bayside, Glendale-River Hills, Maple Dale-Indian Hill and Nicolet school districts foundations.

The fundraiser commences with a community tailgate at noon. Other preconcert activities include an instrument "petting zoo," a silent auction, raffles and performances by local school bands. The marching band will begin its two-hour performance at 1:30 p.m. During intermission, Bucky Badger will lead a push-up contest.

hosts 'Surfacing' exhibit

River Hills - Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 W. Brown Deer Road, hosts an exhibit, "Surfacing" by Jessica Meuninck-Ganger and Nathaniel Stern, through March 24.

Meuninck-Ganger, a printmaker, and Stern, a digital artist, merge practices to create new forms, most frequently "moving images on paper" created by mounting translucent prints and drawings on video screens.

Church seeks volunteers

to pack meals

Grafton - United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay, in conjunction with the Feed My Starving Children hunger relief organization, is holding a food packing event April 4 to 6 at Portal Industries, 1015 W. Cedar Creek Road.

Food will be packed in eight two-hour shifts over the course of the three days. The goal is to recruit 750 volunteers to pack 150,000 meals. Anyone is welcome to participate, regardless of church affiliation. Registration is required and a $10 donation is requested. Additional donations are also welcome.

Club offers scholarships

to students of classical music

Fox Point - The MacDowell Club of Milwaukee holds scholarship auditions for students of classical music from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 20 in the chapel of Bonaventure Hall at Cardinal Stritch University, 6801 N. Yates Road.

Prizes of $1,000, $750 and $500, plus two $125 honorable mentions, will be awarded.

Center seeks vendors

for annual flea market

Shorewood - Vendor tables are available for the ninth annual Shorewood Community Flea Market, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18 in the lower level of the Shorewood Public Library, 3920 N. Murray Ave.

Eight-foot tables for $20 to display sale items. The Shorewood Senior Resource Center is responsible for publicity, including lawn signs, posters and a classified ad in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Toys, household items, comic books, craft items, plants and collectibles have been sold at previous flea markets. No used clothing, food or food products will be accepted for sale.
