Club meeting speaker discusses polio eradication

Mequon - The Mequon-Thiensville Sunrise Rotary Club presents member Dr. Ariba Khan, who will discuss how to promote peace and eradicate polio at the same time, from 7 to 8 a.m. Sept. 14 in the Friends of Concordia Room at Concordia University Wisconsin, 12800 N. Lake Shore Drive.

Dr. Alan Parker, professor emeritus of the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, teaches about the wild mushrooms that abound in Wisconsin forests, fields and lawns. Participants are welcome to bring fresh wild species for identification. After an introduction to the ecology and identification of common mushrooms, participants venture out to an area rich with wild mushrooms. Identification using macroscopic and field characters are emphasized. Transportation is provided.

Yogurt shop holds grand opening event

Event celebrates lives of cancer survivors

Milwaukee - The Cancer Support Community-Greater Milwaukee's Show of Support Celebration is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at The Pfister Hotel, 424 E. Wisconsin Ave.

The event celebrates the lives of Cancer Support Community program participants and cancer survivors through the telling of their poignant stories. Show of Support Celebration participants will be accompanied on stage by the person(s) who provided critical emotional and social support throughout their journey.

Columbia St. Mary's will be honored with the presentation of the second annual Lee Kass Cancer Community Philanthropic Award, which is presented to an individual or organization who has demonstrated benevolence and compassion to individuals and their families who are living with cancer. Through a comprehensive cancer survivorship program, Columbia St. Mary's continues to strengthen our community by supporting families, neighbors and friends whose lives are touched by cancer.

Randy and Anne Sprecher will serve as honorary chairs for the event.

Whitefish Bay - The Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center's Off Center program is sponsoring a trip to see "The Odd Couple" on Nov. 14 at the Northlight Theater in Skokie, Ill.

George Wendt from the TV show "Cheers" and Tim Kazirinsky play the mismatched roommates in Neil Simon's comedy classic.

The cost for the trip is $70, or $65 for center members, which includes travel by coach bus to Skokie. Participants leave the Brown Deer park-and-ride, located at Brown Deer and Green Bay roads, at 9 a.m. and return at 7:30 p.m.

Empty Bowls event benefits local food pantries

Oak Creek - Milwaukee Area Technical College-Oak Creek Campus, 6665 S. Howell Ave., hosts its 14th annual Milwaukee Empty Bowls event from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13.

Attendees will have a choice from a collection of more than 2,000 ceramic bowls handcrafted and donated by local artists, teachers and students. Soups prepared by more than 50 local chefs will be served with bread and other refreshments. Some of the area's top musicians will perform throughout the day.

No registration is required, and a minimum donation of $20 per bowl ($10 for bowls made by children) is requested. Proceeds benefit local food programs.

Milwaukee Empty Bowls also debuts its first ever MEB Cookbook, featuring stories, full-color photos and 65 soup recipes from local restaurants. The cookbook will be available for a $20 donation at the October event or for $25 including shipping online at MilwaukeeEmptyBowls.org.

The Jewish Community Pantry is a beneficiary of the Milwaukee Empty Bowls event.

The series kicks off with a season preview presentation, "A Midsummer Night's Preview," at 7 p.m. July 12 at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, 1360 N. Anaba presents League of Milwaukee Artists exhibit

Shorewood - The League of Milwaukee Artists showcase the work of its members in an exhibit "Painting … Music to My Soul" from Sept. 6 to Oct. 28 at Anaba Tea Room, 2107 E. Capitol Drive.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 6.

The exhibit is available 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, 11 to 9 a.m. Wednesdays to Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.

How the World Began: A Biblical Perspective: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sept. 24; $10 for adult members, $12 for nonmember adults

Participants hear the early stories and insights gained from these allegories. Rabbi Brickman helps participants better understand the Bible's insights into the human condition.

Tuesday Night Magic: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25; $4 for child and $7 for adult members, $6 for child and $9 for adult nonmembers

Participants hike to the tower and ponds to look for birds and frogs and observe pond life. Nets are provided.

The Cranes of Bong: 1:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26; $49 for adult members, $58 for nonmember adults

In the afternoon, participants tour the two-mile-long Green Trail of Bong State Recreation Area that has prairies, lakeshore, thickets and woods. After a bag lunch, participants watch at a viewing platform for the nightly gathering of cranes to pass the night.

Audubon Babies: Exploring Nature with the Very Young: 10 to 11:15 a.m. Sept. 27 and Oct. 25; $5 per session for members, $6 per session for nonmembers

Participants hike on the trails. Dress for the weather; participants explore outdoors rain or shine.

Family Owl Prowl: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 28 (rain date: Sept. 30); $8 for child and $10 adult members, $10 for child and $12 for adult nonmembers

Participants search the center's woods for owls. This program is designed for families.

Family Portraits: Sept. 30 (rain date: Oct. 7)

Visual Image Photography offers professional quality photography for $70, which includes a 16-by-20-inch color portrait. Fifty percent of the fee goes to support education programs at the center. Participants have s'mores by the fire starting at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., participants interact with snakes, frogs and turtles. Then the center will show "The Lorax."

Jungian analyst Dr. Dennis Merritt uses slides and videos to illustrate the Soul of Glacier Country as encountered on Interstate 94 between Milwaukee and Madison and a 5,000-year-old drumlin and kame mandala sacred to the Cheyenne around Campbellsport.

Our Sacred Journey with Dave Gawlik: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 9; $10 for adult members, $12 for nonmember adults

Participants wonder together about the following questions: Where did I come from? Why are we here? How we should live together? How can the earth community flourish with a common purpose? Participants conclude by writing ethical wills for Gaia in light of the New Story.

Morton Arboretum's Fall Splendor: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 24 (rain date: Oct. 31); $82 for adult members, $93 for nonmember adults

Participants explore the Morton Arboretum's 1,700 acres of magnificent trees and gardens, by guided hike and tram, and visit the children's garden, tree house exhibition, nature-themed scarecrows and gift shop. Bring food or eat at the Gingko Café. Transportation, fees and interpretation provided.

Hiking the Ice Age Trail: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 25; $52 for adult members, $60 for nonmember adults

Participants explore the Kellings Lakes segment north of Mauthe Lake. This area is known for its numerous kettle lakes and glacial formations. Transportation and fees are provided. Bring lunch.

Destination: Adventure Island: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 25; $12 for child members per session, $16 for nonmember children per session

Participants view beautiful fall color, visit Mystery Lake and climb the tower. Participants also meet Maria the rosy boa.

Halloween Fling: 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27; $6 for child and $8 for adult members, $8 for child and $10 for adult nonmembers

Register to set up the starting time for the not-so-haunted hikes featuring characters from Eric Carle's books. Participants end the hike with s'mores and a visit to the preschool games area. Indoor activities include visiting birds of prey in the hearth room, making crafts and listening to Frogwater in our auditorium from 5 to 7 p.m.
