Homestead boys basketball team falls just short of Hamilton, 46-39

Dec. 28, 2012 11:15 p.m. | Somewhere, the late Homestead Hall of Fame basketball coach John Chekouras is showing pride, if not exactly smiling.

The pride would have come from the grit, effort and sweat the Highlanders showed Friday night in falling to unbeaten and fifth-ranked in the state Milwaukee Hamilton, 46-39, in the final of Homestead's tournament that is named for Chekouras.

After the game, his widow and his daughter presented the championship plaque to Hamilton coach Tom Diener.

And then maybe Chekouras would have forced a small smile at what his old rival Diener said in honor of him.

"He was one of the finest teachers and coaches that I've ever met in my life," said Diener. "...This is a great event to honor an outstanding coach and an even better person."

Top Line Gym honors beloved dog with pet supply drive

Dec. 28, 2012 11:22 a.m. | Top Line Gym in Glendale is holding a pet supply drive to benefit the Humane Animal Welfare Society through Dec. 31.

Top Line owner Brett Summers is hosting the drive to honor his recently deceased dog and best friend Champ, who ran away in 2007 and was found in a busy intersection by a kind couple who took him to HAWS. Without HAWS, Summers said, their family would not have been able to enjoy the last five years with Champ.

The HAWS list of dog supplies includes: new or lightly used towels and blankets; Pup-eroni dog treats; Nature's Variety Instinct canned dog food and other high quality canned dog foods; Natural Balance Roll; Zuke's dog treats; large, American-made rawhide bones; limited slip/martingale collars; Kong dog toys; jars of meat based baby food; and general supplies like Q-tips, laundry detergent, hand soap, etc.

Donors can call (262) 309-5566 to arrange a drop-off, or can make a check out to HAWS and mail to: Top Line Gym, 2012 West Bender Road, Glendale WI 53209.

Mequon woman pleads guilty to tax evasion

Dec. 26, 2012 4:04 p.m. | A Mequon woman who ripped off her grandmother and her sister has pleaded guilty to tax evasion and filing a false claim against the IRS, according to court documents.

Leah M. Kuchta, 42, who worked as a certified public accountant, pleaded guilty earlier this month. Each of the counts carries up to five years in prison, but she is likely to get much less time under federal sentencing guidelines when she is sentenced in March.

In the plea agreement, the prosecutor agrees not to recommend a sentence of more than 30 months.

According to the plea agreement:

In 2005, Kuchta's grandmother received an inheritance of more than $1 million and it was held in trust. Kuchta persuaded her grandmother to grant her access. She told her grandmother she would invest the money in low-risk investments.
