Brown Deer boys basketball team ralies for 85-70 victory over Greendale

Dec. 04, 2012 10:16 p.m. | It was a personal challenge from Brown Deer coach Kelly Appleby to senior forward Donte Harmon and to the Falcon team in general.

Their unbeaten start to the season was serious jeopardy Tuesday night in Greendale, as Panther guards Jordan Perez (17 points in the first half) and Nick Dalton (15 points in the same session) ran around and through the Falcon defense to the tune of a 31-17 second quarter outburst that put Brown Deer in a 49-36 hole at the break.

"We struggled big time in the first half defensively," said Appleby. "Perez is a very fine player, but we were letting him get to the basket much too easily. We had to go out there and make a bit more uncomfortable."

"We were going to put Donte (Harmon) on him in the first half, but he (Harmon) picked up two fouls, but once we did it in the second half, he (Harmon) was spectacular. We took away the main focus to their offense and then we found a little rhythm ourselves."

Indeed, Perez scored only one more point the rest of the game and Dalton was held scoreless in the second half as the Falcons turned up the team pressure, flipping the score with an impressive 28-7 third quarter run that eventually led to an 85-70 Brown Deer victory.

Glendale lawyer reprimanded for professional misconduct

Dec. 03, 2012 8:15 a.m. | A Glendale lawyer was publicly reprimanded by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Friday and ordered to pay more than $14,000 for the cost of the discipline action.

Acting on a 2010 complaint by the Office of Lawyer Regulation, a referee found that Vladimir Gorokhovsky  committed eight violations in the course of filing a sentence modification motion that his client neither sought nor approved, without even consulting with the client but taking direction -- and payment -- from the defendant's former girlfriend, the victim in the case that landed him in jail.

Further, according to the court's ruling, Gorokhovsky ran up more than $1,800 in fees before he ever communicated with the client, and billed a total of more than $8,000.

To top it all off, once the OLR got involved, Gorokhovsky back-dated a letter to the client and supplied it to OLR investigators.

Gorokhovsky defended the OLR claims during a 2 1/2 day hearing, and appealed the referee's findings. The Supreme Court rejected all his challenges to the referee's findings, as well as Gorokhovsky's suggestion that he acted in good faith during a "learning curve" and should get only a private reprimand.

Nordstrom looked at Bayshore, but focused on Mayfair

Dec. 03, 2012 7:00 a.m. | After last week's news that Nordstrom Inc. would open its Wisconsin department store at Mayfair mall, in Wauwatosa, some Land & Space readers were again asking about Bayshore Town Center, in Glendale, as a possible location for the upscale retailer.

Seattle-based Nordstrom did consider Bayshore several years ago, according to one industry source who was involved in those deliberations. Nordstrom would have taken the place of Sears, which anchors Bayshore's northern end.

But Sears executives wouldn't make a decision on whether to accept an offer to buy out the remaining years on the store's lease, the source said. So, Nordstrom instead focused on Mayfair.

Bayshore also isn't as centrally located as Mayfair. One example: Mayfair is roughly the same distance drive from the North Shore and Waukesha County's Lake Country--both affluent areas with the types of shoppers Nordstrom targets.

I asked Erik Nordstrom, the company's president of stores, about Bayshore.
