Change your clock, change your battery!

As you change your clocks tomorrow morning for daylight savings time, don't forget to also change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector are the only things in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire or carbon monoxide problem 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you’re awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke or carbon monoxide, yet without a working battery, these devices cannot do their job.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. A working smoke alarm significantly increases your chances of surviving a deadly home fire. For more information on smoke detectors visit http://www.usfa.fema.gov/campaigns/smokealarms/alarms/index.shtm.

For more information on carbon monoxide detectors, visit http://www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/co/fswy17.shtm.
