Spill, Baby, Spill!

We're no longer on the eve of an environmental disaster.  This is the day of environmental disaster.  As reports flood in that oil has already reached the shores of Louisiana, many of us are asking, "Why?"  Others are asking, "How?"  And finally, Republicans are asking, "So what?"

Well, that last one isn't exactly true.  Or fair.  But Republicans have done the equivalent of turning their heads in the air, looking around, and asking, "Hmm?  What?  Did you say something?".  They're ignoring what's going on around us.  That is, except Bobby Jindal, who yesterday declared a state of emergency for Louisiana, asking the National Guard to be mobilized.  And, of course, except for Charlie Crist..who has now taken a serious look at his position on drilling.  But don't worry folks, these guys won't be Republicans for long.  They're obviously too sensible and moderate to appeal to the newly rabid core constituency.

Obama, a latecomer to possibility of offshore oil exploration has taken any consideration of expansion off the table for now,and rightly so.  .

Let's face it folks, this one's looking to be a shitter.  You know, 20 years ago or so when the Exxon Valdez crashed, it was an ecological disaster.  That it happened in Alaska, in the nation's backyard, might have reduced its impact to Americans in the continental US.  After all, some people might say, "Eh, Alaska.  That's practically Russia!".

Basically, some version of group amnesia has bandied about for a while now, as the delirious fumes of  "Drill, Baby, Drill!"  chants fumed Republican and tea bagger rallies since 2008.

But even as of today, there are reports that the oil has reached the mighty Mississippi River.  Can the oil spill affect the river going Northbound into the Midwest?  I sure as hell hope not.  But that's what we're faced with now.  Already a "pungent fuel smell" can be inhaled as far north as New Orleans.  Just what those guys need.  Another environmental catastrophe.

As it is, even with oil amounts of far less than the Valdez spill, the Gulf is a much more area, environmentally speaking.  Marshlands in the gulf protect numerous specious of animals, many that are threatened or endangered.  According to CBS news, Jindal said there were 10 wildlife areas or refuges in Louisiana and Mississippi in the oil plume's path.  Shrimp season was allowed to start early to allow shrimpers to try to salvage some catch.

Some of the protected species at risk include North Atlantic BlueFin Tuna, Sea Turtles, sharks, dolphins, whales, Imagine the effect on fishing, shipping, and recreational travel in and along the Gulf.  It's clearly bad, and potentially devastating.

The head of Florida's EPA was also quoted saying that it may be two or three months before the discharge of oil from the underground well can be stopped.

in all this, we shouldn't forget that 11 lives were lost.  Offshore drilling on these platforms can't be the easiest or safest work.  i hope that this, like mine safety, gets a very close look.

  1. All I know is that she is going to be a very rich lady and when the "green" bubble bursts, and Al comes up short, she will laugh all the way to the bank. He has already made billions on this hoax and it won't be shut off until we are all paying $10 gas and our industries are shut down as they can't afford the "carbon footprint" BS. My God, we are all in deep trouble!
  2. Gordy, I think we now know why Al and Tipper bought the new place.
  3. I think you must agree with me . Then we will agree ! Do you agree ? lol
  4. Why can't we all just agree on something? Like what happened in the finale of Lost?
  5. c'mon next blog !! lol
  6. Frankie Just like I thought so far you are not able to reply . You start all your thoughts with some kind of (We all can agree ) but nobody has then you tell us what you say we agree on. Show the facts not all opinion and no facts !
  7. I am all for new initiatives Andrew but the fact is, we will be using oil for another 50-75 years and we had better get our own where we know it is. In the meantime, the entrepreneurs can develop something more efficient. My problem is that this is a follow the money game they are playing and the politically connected thugs that are part of the Shore Bank are set to make a fortune on it. Could it all go down like the ethenol debacle? I don't know the answer but I do know that we are being fed a lot of BS. Our climate runs in cycles as it has for millions of years. Their are now many scientists who say that CO2 HAS NOTHING to do with climate change and Al Gore refuses to comment on anything FACTUAL. I know what you mean about regulation. Bush tried to regulate FM/FM in 2003 AND 2005 and was shot down by the Democrats. We all know how that worked out.
  8. Gordy, I think you're making assumptions in leaps and bounds about green technology and green jobs. Really. That being said, what I'll give you (which I've stated before) is that I have real concerns about a cap and trade market. Unfortunately, and you may disagree, but only regulation brings about the change. Cap and trade's great insight is to try to achieve through greed and profit what can't be gotten through necessary regulation. But I think the idea is speculative, such a market needs to be regulated or else it will cause problems akin to the derivates mess that f*cked up our economy. Yet in places where it's been tested, it does seem to work to some extent.

Where's your entrepreneurial spirit? Where's your innovative attitude?

Like I said, there's a lot of faults and a lot of shortcomings, but investment in green resources, technology, and markets must surely be explored at least as much as the continental shelf, right?

unrelated to our discussions...I've noticed that when it seems like the site doesn't respond to hitting the "send your comment" button, it actually is. That's why when we hit it a few times while it's processing, 3 identical comments get posted. Seems like that's the magical number..happened to me, you and others. I like making it look like more people are reading my blog...but FYI..hitting the button just once does eventually work.
  9. Andy my boy, do you mean the "green" economy that Spain has experimented with and they are now at 20% unemployment, have created few jobs and the "green" companies are closing right and left with $100 million in debts. Same for California, who has been practicing so-called "green" for years. They aren't quite at 20% unemployment but working their way up. THE ENTIRE GREEN BS IS JUST THAT. All one needs to do is follow the politically connected thugs who are involved in the green movement and that is all you need to know. You all are being dupped and even the New York Times, irrelevant as it is, is beginning to agree. The money behind this bogus movement is astronomical and it is YOU AND ALL AMERICANS who are going to pay the BIG price. If you don't get it by now, you probably won't. Just follow the money and you will KNOW what is going on. By the way, I wonder why Al Gore just bought a $9 million mansion on the coast when he claims the sea level will rise 20 feet. The man and ALL of the greenies are as hypocritical as President Calderon and his lecturing our Congress on our immigration laws. I suggest we just take on Mexico's immigration laws. Problem solved. Check them out.
