Berkeley's 2.0

Berkeley's, Silver Spring, Restaurant

Last night, Berkeley's invited about a dozen villagers into their restaurant to have a "tasting" .. and to solicit ideas on how to remake Berkeley's into a thriving restaurant on Silver Spring.

Suffice it to say, there was no shortage of opinions.

  • The prices are too high.  The prices are just right.
  • The menu is too nice.  The menu is just right.
  • Service has been suspect.  Service is better now.
  • The wine glasses don't have stems.  The stemless wine glasses are awesome.
  • The walls are too green.    .. Ok, no one objected to that.
  • Et cetera, et cetera.

I suggested a foosball table, but then was voted off the island.

Suffice it to say, Marija and Ryan Whitman, WFB residents both, took all the suggestions seriously.  These guys are trying their best to create a spot for Whitefish Bay to commune and eat.

My guess is that it will become slightly more casual and comfortable, more manly.  The challenge of their freshman year will be behind them, and they'll build on their fan base.

While no time-table is set for décor changes, look for some immediate adjustments at Berkeley's throughout autumn.  New fall menu items.   A dedication to great service.  Nightly specials.

Berkeley's 2.0, so to speak.   Make sure you visit again.

  1. I am all for restaurants on Silver Spring. I moved to the area 3 years ago and couldn't believe the lack of eating options along the street away from Bayshore. I was exited to try Berkeley's when it first opened. Boy, was I disappointed. I thought to myself that it had only been open for a few weeks and I would give it another shot. Same result.
For what you get I thought the prices were on the higher end. I have now problem paying this amount, but if I do, I expect something better than average. I would say the dishes I had were below average. The food was bland. Nothing on the menu really stood out.
Also didn't really like the whole vibe of the place. The service was pretty bad and it felt like our group was rushed out of the place with people at the front (who I think were the owners) constantly staring at our table waiting for us to leave. I understand that they want to turn the tables around, but jeeze, let a group finish desert.
As somebody else mentioned something like The Oakcrest in Shorewood is what Silver Spring needs. A little more laid back, a little less uppity. Maybe my demographic is not what Berkeley's is aiming for. I am 32 with Grad school degree. Seems like I would be a target demographic but don't sense that there.
I gave this place a second chance and I just don't think I can give it a third try. As I said, I am all for a great place to eat on Silver Spring, I just don't think Berkely's is it. If I am looking for a bite to eat locally, We end up going to The Oakcrest.
  2. What are you talking about back to issue! First if I heard political view points from the staff no matter what view point I would be reluctent to visit often. Most comments that I have heard were as spattered as Buckleys opening comments. Since I have patronized the establishment many times , and I have come to the conclusion that The food is good but to different for my kids to enjoy . The waitresses are mostly doing other things. The early mornings are not well staffed(long waits and several times no cooks ready ).No need for that singer. She ran me out of there the last time I was there. The Biers, are not bier accept Hacker. They are for young wannabe drinkers to drink. (I cant just sit and relax with those fad biers. I continue to patronize Berkeleys hoping for improvement. I have seen improvement!! Keep it up I will be there!!
  3. I don't want my kids watching TV *in a restaurant*. I didn't say anything about other places. And I didn't say I hate sports. I don't hate sports.

(Though the previous commenter won't be surprised to learn that my hands hang very limply from my wrists and that I speak with a pronounced lisp. Like all liberals.)
  4. Why doesn’t it surprise me that Ted H doesn’t want his kids watching television and that he hates sports? On to the point...Berkley's simple needs to copy Oak Crest Tavern's (Shorewood) business model. And I wish the owners would tell their bartenders to refrain from spouting off unprovoked political points of view (liberal) while I'm trying to enjoy a Sunday morning Bloody Mary. I don't care what the bartenders view is on global warming, national/socialized healthcare or Obama. A couple suggestions for you.
  5. I've been there twice with family, and I don't remember slow service. One problem from our perspective is that both times the TV was on, which we don't want our kids watching.

Even apart from the kids, I've always been irked when restaurants and bars leave the TV on. Why would anyone want to watch TV in a restaurant? (I guess I know the answer... sports. But can't you check scores on your PDA or cellphone nowadays?)
  6. On my stops the too bright decor could have been overlooked had the service not been so painfully slow. The food definitely had potential, but not quite worth the extremely long wait. Prices are high, but if the quality's good and service reasonably fast that can be overlooked.

I hope they make a go of it because it's places like Berkley's, Bruegger's, Stone Creek, and City Market (if it comes to fruition) that will be the lifeblood to that street.
