I cannot think of a better example of how society has to dumb things down for the slowest person in the country than what is happening with the conversion to digital TV. Sure the government screwed it up by confusing people as to who would need a converter box. The coupon program could have been depleted by people who did not need them yet applied for them because they thought that something free was coming to them. Having them expire was also not a brilliant move. But because there are so many people who have procrastinated and did not want to spend an extra $40 for a converter, the conversion date is now being delayed.
As a cable subscriber, the moving of the conversion date does not impact me, except for those annoying public service announcements and crawls on just about every local station program has been very annoying. Even in this tough economic times, if you have saved money by not paying the satellite companies or the cable company, you should have 40 bucks to spend on a digital converter. If you don't, TV must not be that important to you. Even people who are upset and cannot understand why the government is making the change, many have been able to get a converter box even with a coupon. Remember, this is the same government that is forcing you to buy a new TV or a new TV converter box is the same one that will be spending $1 trillion to jump start the economy. The kindly old government that is assisting citizens in buying these converter boxes are made where?
Even though it was unclear who needed the boxes or why we needed the boxes should not be an excuse for not meeting a deadline. It is shameful and embarrassing to know that seven years notice is not enough time. Because we have to dumb things down, is it any wonder that we look to our schools and wonder why they are not turning out better educated people? The educated people in this society will have to endure these annoying public service announcements saying that the date is being pushed back. How convenient. How stupid. That's what's wrong with this country today, the government continues to pander to the ignorant. This is why the government today is trying to persuade the citizens with a good deal we are going to get by spending over $1 trillion in added national debt with few details.
The state is not doing much better. They have apparently wrapped up and deal to increase taxes with little coverage by the media. The media is too wrapped up in trying to continue to blame the Bush administration for the continued partisanship that is being demonstrated in Congress. It's also being demonstrated similarly in the state. The Democrats run both houses of the legislature and the executive branch. Why can't they pass something sensible? Well, the answer is simple they are Democrats. All they know is tax increases. They have expanded social programs and bloated the bureaucracies and spend far more money than what came in as revenue. So why did society not turn into a modern day Eden because of all of the social programs that were supposed to keep the poor from suffering? The only solution is to blame businesses and people with jobs for not paying enough taxes. That's the Democrat solution.
