AURORA: A call to wake-up...again!
As the rest of the industrialized world once again watches America plunge deeper and deeper into the abyss of guns-guns-guns, some NRA puppets defend weaponry craziness with references to the Constitution and the Second Amendment. I have read that Amendment hundreds of times and cannot find anything there that defends or justifies the insanity of gun proliferation in the United States. A regulated militia, I can understand, and that refers to police, National Guard, and the national military forces. But it does not refer to every kook in America having the right to own a gun.
It is easier to understand the greedy lobbying groups that get special favors and tax evading measures for corporations, the wealthy, and the military-industrial complex than it is to understand why we get goofy about the right of every household, every individual to have a gun or guns; and irrationally support lobbying groups like the NRA to promote its irrational arguments. Please, read the Second Amendment yourself. Read it!
So natural does it seem to be in American society that owning a gun is fine that we start early, when our kids are young. We take them out hunting. In Wisconsin, the specialty is hunting deer. Imagine, what sort of mind enjoys going out into the woods to kill one of the most timid animals there, a deer? And doing it with a high-powered, mechanized, telescopic rifle! And showing our kids that this is civilized! And even showing it as an example of mature manhood!.. Some manhood, killing a timid deer from hundreds of yards away with a powerful weapon. THAT is sport? THAT is something to teach your little kid? THAT is something that shows one's manhood! Huh?
Well, the argument goes, that is simply modifying the deer herd size. Hey, let me give you an alternative, if you must kill deer. Butcher the deer meat to keep the herd size agreeable, and feed the meat to starving people. At least it would show some modicum of civilized behavior.
What happened in Aurora, Colorado, so near to Columbine, is but a news-worthy example because of the number of people killed and injured, to what goes on all over the U.S. everyday. We own more guns in the U.S. than any Western World nation, and we kill more people with them than any similar society. The reason, so obvious, so staring you in the face, is the presence of guns!
It is time for us to finally grow up, recognize what we are doing to ourselves, recognize the uncivilized behavior, and act in a mature fashion, an intelligent fashion, and get rid of guns. People in America aren't being killed only by nutcases, but by guns. There is no need for Americans to own all these guns.
If you want to defend the U.S. Constitution, at least READ the Second Amendment. I, too, am for defending the Constitution, including the Second Amendment. I support an organized and regulated militia, the National Guard, the local and state police, the U.S. military. I do not encourage us to write laws that give every misdirected and misguided person the right to attack weapons, automatic weapons, and have a stash of ammunition readily available for mass mayhem.
Imagine, it is now necessary to have signs at the entry to churches, schools, libraries, etc. indicating that concealed guns are not allowed. Imagine! We need to be reminded!?!
